To make my hoop-style drums I start with a hoop which is a recycled by-product of a local metal factory. This extremely hard cardboard hoop is made to store rolls of sheet metal used for industrial purposes.
I cut these hoops into ringsto make a more traditional depth of hoop for the drum. Then I coat the hoop with a polyurethane sealer to make it moisture resistant, and paint it a specific color. I then stretch the wet rawhide over the hoop and use artificial sinew to string the drum head to form the drum surface. When it is dry I paint the design onto the drum surface with acrylic paint and then seal the painting with an acrylic varnish to protect the painting and the drum head.
The designs that I am most interested in emulating are those of the indigenous peoples of the Americas and Europe, mainly the American Indians, Southwestern and South American Indians, and Celtic people. I incorporate ancient as well as contemporary designs with my own art and apply it to the drum head or pottery surface.
