Gourd Drums

These drums are handmade from natural birdhouse-type gourds and rawhide.

I saw open the gourds, remove the seeds and what is left of the dried flesh of the gourd, paint it with a clear acrylic sealer and stretch a natural rawhide over one or both ends. When  the rawhide is dry I paint the designs onto them.

The designs that I am most interested in are those of the indigenous peoples of the Americas and Europe, mainly the American Indians, Southwestern and South American Indians, and Celtic people. I incorporate ancient as well as contemporary designs with my own art and apply it to the drum head or pottery surface.
